Frequently Asked Questions

Our journey with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu started with a genuine love for the sport and everything it teaches — confidence, resilience, discipline and respect.

As a family-run club, creating a welcoming environment is really important to us. Whether you're a complete beginner, an experienced grappler, or a parent looking for something positive for your child, we want everyone to feel comfortable walking through the door.

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about training with us.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. Many people start with little or no fitness background. Fitness improves naturally through training and everyone progresses at their own pace.

I’ve never trained BJJ before. Can I still join?

Absolutely. Many of our members start with no previous experience. Our classes are beginner friendly and we focus on helping everyone learn safely and confidently.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first session you can wear:

  • A T-shirt or rashguard
  • Shorts or leggings (no zips or buttons)
  • Training is done barefoot on the mats
  • Long hair must be tied back
  • Please bring water with you

If you continue training you will need a Gi (Jiu Jitsu uniform) for Gi classes.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

Gi classes are trained wearing the traditional Jiu Jitsu uniform.
No-Gi classes are trained in rashguards and shorts without the Gi.

Both styles develop different grips, strategies and techniques.

Am I too old to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Not at all. People start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at all ages, and many begin in their 30s, 40s, 50s or even later.

Jiu Jitsu is based on technique, leverage and timing, not strength or athletic ability. Everyone trains at their own pace, and classes are structured so beginners can learn safely and build confidence over time.

What age can children start?

Our kids classes are designed for ages 4–12. Training focuses on coordination, discipline, confidence and learning the foundations of Jiu Jitsu in a fun and supportive environment.

Is Jiu Jitsu safe?

Safety is a priority in all our classes. Techniques are taught in a controlled environment with supervision and partners tap to stop submissions before any injury occurs.

Can parents watch kids classes?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay and watch. We encourage a supportive environment for all our young students.

Do I have to compete?

No. Competition is completely optional. Many people train purely for fitness, self-defence and enjoyment.

Will I get hurt training with someone more experienced?

No. In fact, training with more experienced students is often one of the safest ways to learn.

Higher belts understand control, positioning and how to apply techniques safely. They are taught to train responsibly and help newer students learn at a comfortable pace.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is built around respect and communication. If a submission is applied, you can tap at any time and your partner will immediately release the technique.

Our coaches always supervise training to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone on the mats.

Can beginners and experienced people train together?

Yes. Our classes are designed so beginners can learn safely while more experienced grapplers continue developing their skills.

I work late. Can I still train?

Of course. Life and work happen — we understand. Just arrive when you can and jump in.

How do memberships work?

Memberships are paid monthly via Direct Debit through GoCardless, taken on the 1st of each month.

If you start mid-month, a pro-rata payment is taken at sign-up to cover the period until the next billing date.

What hygiene standards should members follow?

Good hygiene is essential in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to keep everyone safe and healthy.

All members are expected to:

• Arrive to class clean and in freshly washed training gear
• Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed short
• Remove all jewellery before training.
To help keep the mats and training partners clean, please do not wear makeup during training, as it transfers onto mats and uniforms.

If you have any contagious skin conditions (such as ringworm, impetigo, or staph infections), please wait until it has fully cleared before returning to training.
